Designed by the Italian fashion group Diesel, the Pelican certainly has a flamboyant side - each of its 30 rooms is theatrically designed in a different theme – but it doesn’t feel exclusive. As a guest, you are welcomed as an insider; all pretentiousness is checked at the door.


The rooms of this boutique are tastefully decorated with antiques, flea-market finds and other kitsch, and all are daringly titled, with names like Executive Fifties, Viva Las Vegas, and Some Like it Wet. All the rooms have recycled oak floors, an entertainment center, fridges filled with complimentary water, designer beauty products, and wireless Internet access. The bathrooms are minimal but known for their incredible showers heads, which produce a pulsating, rain-like stream you won’t want to leave. A lovely touch: chocolate and weather reports alike are delivered daily.


The hotel is located on fashionable Ocean Drive, steps from the beach (Don’t forget to ask for free beach chairs and towels). The hotel houses the Pelican Café, an acclaimed restaurant with sought-after terrace and sidewalk seating. It’s an especially great spot to read the morning paper, have breakfast, and watch the roller-bladers, runners, dog-walkers and beachgoers.
