The Experience

The end product of Christian Lacroix's first incursion into hotel design, Hotel du Petit Moulin is a fantastical concoction of colors, styles and objects, drawing inspiration from its historic and eclectic Marais location as well as the trademark eccentricity of the designer's own imagination.

The Scene

Housed in two 17thcentury buildings (where Paris' first boulangerie was once established), Hotel du Petit Moulin sits in the northern portion of the Marais, one of the most stylish and hip Parisian zip codes. In fact, Rue du Poitou--on which the hotel is located--has become a magnet for designers and fashion insiders alike with its trend-setting boutiques and shops renowned for their made-to-order capabilities. Nonetheless, historic Paris is only steps away at the Marche des Enfants Rouges, the city's oldest market, where all sorts of delicacies can be found from organic produce to meats to cheeses to wine and pastries.

The Concept

Despite the preserved boulangerie façade (which dates back to 1900), the interior of the hotel is predominantly modern, easily reaching over-the-top status from many a perspective: bold colors and patterns (intentionally) clash with one another while hand-picked objects are juxtaposed with different textures and styles ranging from sixties and seventies-inspired furniture to antique Venetian mirrors and rococo accents to polka dot carpets and starry skies wallpaper. The result of all this is a wonderfully theatrical concoction that can be considered tres Lacroix, for those familiar with one of fashion's great eccentrics.

The Look

The 17 rooms are designed to maximize and complement each of their unique characteristics such as ceiling heights, views, and location inside the building. Drawing inspiration from the eclecticism of the Marais and from the belief that a hotel room should be a journey, Lacroix created an environment that he described as a "dollhouse, where you see very different atmospheres from one floor to the next."

In Short

Hotel du Petit Moulin is everything you'd expect from Lacroix: exuberance, eclecticism and a dose of quirkiness, reflecting that which has become one of the trendiest and most non-conformist areas of Paris--and making the hotel the perfect backdrop for anyone seeking a bit of French drama in their lives.

We stayed here for two nights and paid more than 550 euros for it. This is not exactly cheap for a 4 star hotel in Paris. The property is interesting... more »

"...On the fashionable northern edge of the Marais, this eclectic 17-room hotel--each chambre with a different decor by Christian Lacroix--has been an instant hit..."
MSN Travel
"...Walking into each room can feel like walking into a Dulux colour chart: whether it's the explosion of lime green walls and threaded carpet, an abstract Tudor-esque back wall mural. or purple, green and blue artwork...you just know its bold palette comes with the bobo seal of approval..."
